(CNN)--at 27, Neil Pokorny climbing the corporate ladder.A successful regional sales manager for a global automaker, is driven by competition but as got busy at work, the competitive spirit of the old sports--swimming and rowing--took back seat.

Made it to the gym regularly, he says, but he hasn't been a real fitness goal.

"I've just decided I wanted to get aback into appearance and for a Triathlon was six months away, I signed one day" Pokorny says.

widely as this new objective was--an event that includes swimming, cycling and running--began training, slowly but surely.

"For me, it was easy because my traveling for work all year round. But tell me that I wanted to do something one hour every day, "said Pokorny."If I am traveling, I could go running from my hotel. If I were home, I could go cycling."

History of Pokorny isn't unusual. It is part of a trend fast sport of Triathlon, which, according to Mike may of the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, is the "new marathon."According to May, the sport has grown by more than 50 percent during the past two years.

It is a sport that embraced by Dr. Sanjay Gupta CNN Gupta Fit nation's Triathlon Challenge, 2010 and six iReporters trained from January to July, then competed together with Nautica New York City Triathlon.

CNN call for entries for the 2011 challenge Triathlon fit Nation opens Wednesday.

USA Triathlon, the governing body of the sport sees increasing swelling.

Are you ready for a challenge? Just TRI!

"Have we experienced such great growth as an organization with an annual contribution to us over the past five years than 50000 135,000 annual members," said Chuck Menke, Director marketing and communications in the USA Triathlon.

And sport, like athletes, comes in all shapes and sizes, from the distance Ironman plus 15-hour's distance entry-level super-sprint.

Meredith Moore, 35, was a former competitive swimmer who had gotten busy living life and management of an enterprise wealth management objectives given the appropriateness of the location for business goals.

She, too, didn't sign up for a Triathlon on a whim.

"When I got into it first, I was trying to lose weight all the typical women put in College," said Moore."In my first race, my whole goal was to finish."

The most popular distance-sprint Triathlon-consists of a 500-meter swim, a stroll 12 miles, bike and run a 5 k is largely responsible for the enormous increase of USAT membership roles.

But why such a growth spurt, about 30 years now after sport started? Menke says is a combination of the Olympic Games--Triathlon made its debut in 2000 Sydney Games--a growing group of middle-aged competitors looking to recover their sport, and the desire for fitness-conscious camaraderie.

"I think it has become popular for people who have established themselves in their careers, have a family, and that is quite settled in their lives, professionally and personally, and who are seeking a new challenge," said Menke.

Another tie, Video says Laura Cozik, founder of the Club Triathlon Team lipstick and CNN fit nation's Athletic Director, is the ability to cross-train.

"The fact that your cross-compilation is much healthier, isn't performing the same repetitive movements with your organization on the day and the day with the option to. swim a day when you're running sore, or swim and bike when you nurse injury is much better for you."

But if sport may be right for many, the cost of entry can be prohibitive for some.

"The first year is expensive, because at least, about 1500 $ in supplies, plus training, plus Race entry fee," says Cozik. But, says the outcome is that equipment--bikes, wetsuits, garments and shoes--are likely to endure shortly.

And according to data of USAT, triathletes tend to be higher income first--the average annual salary triathlete has a $ 128,000.

But, once people says Menke broadcasted bug Triathlon, becomes a way of life.

"Is really a part of their lives, just as their career, family, religion," he said. "Becomes more than just a sport, but a piece of who.

Pokorny and Moore say now you're officially transmitted.

"It is a very efficient sport because it gave me this avenue outside the project to be competitive and to achieve their goals," said Pokorny. "The first line I made was a sprint [distance], and I was smoking--I liked it. "

"When you complete your first, get addicted," said Moore. "One fun, cool sport and the people around it is very cool. "
