URGENT ACTION ALERT ON FOOD SAFETY LEGISLATION
The Senate is coming back to the ugly duckling, and Food Safety Modernization Act (s. 510) is scheduled for a cloture vote this week.We asked to act on this question several times this year and now were in the final push. it is essential that you call your Senators now to urge them to change or oppose s. 510!
S. 510 much FDAs expands authority over processed foods and fresh fruits and vegetables and would give FDA authority to impose extensive requirements, heavy even smaller treatment plants and farms that sell to local consumers.
We need change Tester-Hagan to protect our local food producers vulnerable!
ACT
Please call both of your Senators. you can find their contact information in www.senate.gov or by calling the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121.
Urge Senators to change or oppose s. 510 and specifically:
1) propert TESTER HAGAN to avoid the imposition of new federal regulations in small-scale producers, direct marketing.
2) Against any change to add criminal penalties for s. 510.
As it is written at the time, s. 510 would make our food supply less secure, harming local producers, increasing our dependence on imported food due to the burden on domestic producers and giving FDA new powers without blaming the Agency by its flaws.
TALKING POINTS
1. local food, small producers did not contribute to outbreaks of foodborne diseases highly publicized and should not be subjected to extensive new federal regulations.Although s. 510 includes some provisions that require flexibility, the current language of accounts still imposes extensive requirements new even more small farmers and food producers.State and local regulation already proved enough for local food producers; we don't need new federal regulations.
2. more regulation and registration obligations could destroy small businesses that bring jobs and food for local communities. this time of economic hardship, we need more local food business!Congress must work to reduce the regulatory burden on them, not increase them.
3. food safety and security come from a local food system diverse and vibrant.Local foods give consumers the option of buying from producers who know, creating a transparent and accountable system of food without supervision from the Federal Government.
4. additional FDA Legislation is counterproductive. FDA has used its existing authority and. instead of focusing its resources on the problems posed by imported foods and processing large installations, FDA chose small target processors. While approving Unlabeled GMOS to insert our food supply has opposed raw milk and interfered with freedom of choice for informed adults who want to have access to healthy eating. Simply give FDA increased authority and power will not improve the supply of food, unless Congress requires the Agency to concentrate on agribusiness and small local producers.
5. Regulation increasing our food vendors in the internal market will lead to increased dependency on imported food, harm our economy and our security. The Bill will create incentives for retailers to import more foods from other countries, because it will overwhelm family farms and small-sized company and will be virtually impossible to perform external food plants to the same standards and inspections. the Bill creates a considerable competitive disadvantage for agricultural production and food US ALL (see analysis http://ftcldf.org/news/news-20oct2009-2.html,).
6. s. 510 not solves many of the fundamental problems with our food. the Bill does not cover cattle ranches that cause dangerous e. coli patogênos, nor does it deal with issues such as BPA, contamination by pesticides and herbicides, GMO, or the many other contaminants that affect our health is not productive to focus the bacterial contamination and nothing more.
